What is an APK file?

Android application package file (APK) is the package file used to install applications like software and middle-ware onto devices with Android operating system and other certain operating systems, such as Blackberry 10 with OS version 10.2.1.
APK files are analogous to other application packages such as MSI packages in Windows or Deb packages in Debian-based operating systems like Ubuntu. To make an APK file, a program for Android is compiled at first, and then all parts are packaged into one file. An APK file contains all information of the program, including code (such as .dex files), resources, assets, certificates, and manifest file. Like many files in other formats, APK files also are able to change names as compilers' need and the file name ends with ".apk".
APK files are a type of archive with .apk as the filename extension, especially in zip packages based on the JAR file format. The MIME type associated with APK files is application/

How to install APK?

An Android application is stored in an APK file (i.e., a file named by {Application*Name}.apk). You must install the APK on your Android phone in order to run it. There are three different ways to install APK files on your phone:

The easiest way is to download the application from the Android Market or a website directly and put it into the SD card mounted in your phone, then click the APK file to install it.

The second way is to download the APK file with your computer, connect your phone's SD card to the computer (or connect the phone with inserted SD card to the computer via USB cable) and copy the APK file to the SD card, then insert the SD card to the phone and install the APK file from the SD card using Application Installer or File Manager that you can download from the Android Market. The method is useful for installing non-market applications (i.e., applications not available on the Android Market).

The third way is to install Android Software Development Kit (SDK ) on your computer, then connect the phone via USB cable to the computer and use Android Debug Bridge (in the SDK) to install the APK on the phone. The method is more suitable for developers and technical users who need to install non market applications.

How to install APK files on an Android Phone?

Installing apps on Android is relatively simple with the Android Market. Search for an app, select it and click "install". However, there are occasions where you may want to install a newly-released app or an app that is not available in the Android Market. In these cases you have to manually download and install an .apk file. An .apk file behaves in similar manner as an ".exe" file on Windows, you need to copy it to your device and run it. Here are some ways that you can manually install an application without going through the market.
Before operating a manual installation of apps using the .apk files, you need to allow your phone to install from “Unknown Sources” (i.e. non-Market apps)at first.
To do it, find Menu -> Settings ->Security and check the box marked "Unknown Sources".
The Conventional Method to Install APP

Install File Manager
Android cannot browse the data on your SD card spontaneously, so you need a file manager from a market to work it out. There are a variety of file managers available on Android, but my favorite is ASTRO File Manager.

Copy .apk file to SD card
Once you have ASTRO File Manager installed, connect your Android device to a PC via USB cable. Mount the SD card and put in the .apk file you would like to install.

Install .apk
On your Android device, use ASTRO File Manager to search for the .apk file and select it.

Here will come out a dialog box allowing you to install the app. Select "Open App Manager".
On the next two pages, select "Install" twice to install the .apk.

When all are done, the installing is finished.
